Regarding Village of Nightmare 2

Hey, been a while. I largely ignore the e-mail account attached to this blog nowadays, but I do check it every so often, and thanks to that I noticed a couple comments about the sequel to this little game. (As an aside, the reason I've never actually responded to any of the other comments on this blog after I finished the translation was that I couldn't help anymore, or the answer had already been given.)

Regardless, when I popped back in to check out this new spangled sequel, I played it for a half an hour or so and thought it was pretty good so I left a message on the "News" tab to express my interest in translating it should any of the people who let me know about it pop back around. Since then I've taken a little bit more time to actually play through the rest of it, and I'm sadly not very impressed.

So, to be clear: I very much doubt I'll actually translate Village of Nightmare 2.

Why? Well...

The reasons for this are myriad, but I have to say that it's mainly because the content is lacking. The writing itself is pretty much like before, there are some neat things they did with the story, a lot of old characters return or cameo in an amusing fashion, some old annoyances were removed... But unfortunately many NEW annoyances were added, yet more old annoyances are still there, there are very few CGs compared to the previous game, and most irritating of all, a lot of the corruption was pretty much skipped over.

To be fair, I might very well have missed some stuff. Without the editor program to look into what's actually there, I just played through to whatever seemed most expedient, so I might have missed extra stuff, or missable scenes. I kind of doubt it, overall, but it's certainly possible. That said, even ignoring the segments that seemed to have skipped points, the corruption in general happened way too fast. I thought this was fine in the beginning since several corruptions in the beginning of the first game weren't exactly slow going, but in this one people went from normal to succubus in about a handful of sentences at times.

Not to say that there weren't slow corruptions, or nice scenes. The times CGs were used were usually okay, and the school corruption was great (even if it also included one of the worst instances of skipping, with the teacher's corruption happening off screen), but in general things had no sense of drawn out tension. There were some decently drawn out corruption scenes near the end, but by that point about 80% of the place had already been finished.

The actual battle sections (as in RPG gameplay from RPG Maker) were pretty terrible too, probably the biggest annoyance introduced to the game beyond the content. They weren't awful as far as standard RPG stuff goes, but who the hell is actually playing it for something like that? They added nothing. The end dodge-person game was even more annoying than the one in the first game too. The story that was present was kind of weird at times too, like a section during one of the battle parts that involved a child being found, then ending up killed by a beast that was hounding you for a while. Some sad music played, he want "O-Onee-chan... blarg", and then absolutely no one proceeded to give a shit. I can only assume it was some sort of joke or meme.

But really, most of the gripes are sort of minor compared to content point. I know people's feelings on it were pretty mixed at best, but I actually did enjoy the CG art from the first game, and the fact that there were so few included in the game, on top of the sex scenes being very loose until the end, left me pretty disappointed.

There are other things to praise, or complain about with the game, but I won't go into them. I've already ranted about it long enough. The bottom line for it all is that I don't really feel motivated to translate the game even if I had the free time for it (which is incredibly iffy). Perhaps if an enhanced addition for the game pops up I'll reconsider, but as it stands, it's not likely to happen.

That's it from me.

  1. I kinda share your feelings. The first game was awesome mainly thanks to the slowly progressing corruption and lots of CG for characters (I loved corruption of main priest and swordswoman/magician duo)
Seqel is still great in its own right but it seems inferior to the original, It feels as if the creators had overly ambitious plans and realized halfway through that they need to cut down the project in size. I think that Jkank actually wrote in reply to some comment on his homepage that they had to scrap transformation of the teacher and blacksmith.
Corruption of the teacher was the one I was looking forward to the most. It's an outrage that they cut it out xD
At the beginning I thought that this game is half-ready and that authors will polish it with next patches but Jkank already declared that most likely all we will get are bug fixes.
There will be no awesome reminiscence room like in the original...
Why won't you share your opinion with the authors? You are the hero who gave a lot of time and attention to bring Village of Nightmare to the non-japanese world. I think they might be interested.
Do you know someone who might be commissioned to translate it? I asked once some hentai translators about translation of RPG maker games and they were unable to help me, maybe you can help?

    1. That's unfortunate to hear. Granted, I'm sure they weren't planning on doing an 'enhanced' version of the first game either, so I wouldn't necessarily count it as impossible, but them having no plans for it makes it sort of unlikely.

As for contacting the authors, no. I'm too much of a lurker for that in general. I kind of doubt the authors would care either.

As far as commissions go, sorry. Again, lurker. I don't interact with the VN/translation community for these types of things much, so I don't really know anybody.

    3. So I managed to find a translator and it's finished. Have you seen it? What do you think about it?

  2. I agree with your sentiments. I played VoN 2 using AGTH, but my Boner-O-Meter said that outside of the school corruption sequence, the corruption just wasn't very interesting compared to the first game.

  3. He did release a side game today on the female to futanari head teacher which does not seems to be to bad.

  4. Yep, it seems japanese fans also complained about vice-principal corruption not making it into the game so he released a game dedicated solely to her xD it has plenty of pictures which is good xp

  5. Well, seeing as they released a omake about the teacher last week it seems the creators also think it's lacking.
The feedback from the Japanese fans, as far as I can tell, has been the same as ours: "it's good, but feels unfinished". Maybe we'll get more omakes about the skipped characters. I can dream, right?

Also this game also got me thinking if we'll see a third one, ever. I see no point in dedicating so much screen time to the exorcists at the beginning but we only get Green this time around. It feels like the creator at least entertains the idea of making the succubus clash with all of their organization, and a game with them going head to head would be neat. Then again, I won't get my hopes up because even if the makers intend to do this, it will take years to no end just like took for this second game.

  6. The development of these games really shouldn't be as long as it is, the CG doesn't even require an artist for goodness sake.

Anyway, I would be interested in a translated version of this game, but I do agree that they should continue to release some more content for this game like with the recent teacher omake.

  7. I Commissioned translation of VoN2 and teacher's sidestory. Here is the link for the translated version of the latter:

The translator is a fan of coruption himself and he is also capable of translating RPGmaker games, unfortunately as he himself admits, his language is not so great. If you could post typos and mistakes somewhere around here I would be grateful ^^
Also a request to Rabidchibi do you think you could post VoN2 somewhere around here once it's translated? I want to spread the love and it would be cool if lots of people could enjoy translated game and I can't think of a better place for that to happen than your blog. It's already known to many people and new players of VoN1 could immediately find its sequel. Do you think that would be possible?

    3. Should also add that the grammar and proofreading on the game could use some work.

  8. well, i can agree with the fact that the first chapter was WAY better...but...i don't understand a single word of japanese, and playing it with a machine translation is kind of disappointing too T.T
So...i still hope some kind soul will take the project on and translate it T.T

  9. For anyone that's interested, I'm working on translating the game. I'm probably about 60% done, though I won't give a solid ETA on when it'll be finished.

  10. In case anyone missed It I commissioned translation of VoN2
It was done by randanypro and you can download it on his homepage here:
    http://randanypro.blogspot.com/
This transltion is partially proofread and needs some minor fixes but it's completely playable and fun.
I have a question to rabidchibi who is the precursor that first brought the awesome VoN to us non-japanese speakers... What do you think about this translation? ;P

  11. The first game was fun, and kinky as hell. the story was good too.
I want the entire second game to be remade. because its always a shame for a story to go to waste.

  12. wish there was a second one that would be worth doing in english. first one was awesome to play. but by the sounds of it they messed it up on the second one :/

  13. After VoN2 and Suguroku I commissioned also a translation of short game - "Church of Nightmare" made by jkank and Akunosu_shouchou. The translation was done by Randanypro but he was spirited away before posting fruits of his labor on his blog. (https://randanypro.blogspot.com)
It would be awful to keep this just to myself so here guys - enjoy Rand's translation.
Tell me if the links stop working :)
