Information

Village of Nightmare is a short indie eroge of sorts made using RPG Maker XP for the gameplay engine and 3D Custom Girl for the creation of character models. Despite being made with RPG Maker, there isn't any turn-based combat. Originally in Japanese, I decided to try my hand at translating it into English. The purpose of this blog is to host all materials related to that effort.

The game itself is set in a fantasy world with various monsters and demons. You play a character who is soon corrupted and transformed into a succubus, and then given a mission to go to a nearby village and transform all of its residents into succubi as well.

I've finished translating the game into English, but it's honestly a rough translation due to my amateurish skills. You can see further details, and/or download it to try it yourself over here. Please note, the download is not a patch, it's a full standalone release. As such, you don't need to download the original version unless you want to play the game in Japanese.

If you are curious about the original version for one reason or another, you can download it here on the creator's website (password is "akuoti").

I'm not going to be accepting any donations for this work, but if for some reason you want to help with the translation, you can do so by playing it and if you spot any grammatical errors, text that sounds odd and you think should be reworded in some fashion, or any missing text or bugs in areas that should otherwise be translated, you can posting them here on the blog for me to attempt to fix.

  2. You're welcome. I thought that this game was pretty enjoyable despite some hiccups with the interface, so it's an interesting way to pass the time.

  3. Great job on the translation. Great idea with corrupting the town style game. Although one downside is that you need a certain order and triggers to advance which makes it a tad repetitive but well rewarded. Keep up the translation. the story plot is very interesting so far.

  4. Cool game, but I'm having trouble, I don't know if its a bug, but I can't the blacksmith doesn't ask me to help her. It worked ver .3, but its not working in .71.

    1. Are the Peddler Siblings in town? You need them to pop up before the blacksmith will ask for your help. If they are, just keep going in and out of Metallica's house, talking to her each time.

    1. Do you have RPG Maker XP RTP installed? (i.e., not RPG Maker VX RTP or any other versions.) If you do and you're still getting that error, try googling the dll file and downloading the file from one of the available downloading sites (This place, for example).

    2. thanks, its seem that i downloaded the wrong rpgmaker >.<, now the game is working.

    3. uh, where do i put the .dll I downloaded? I put it in system32, the RPGmaker XP folder, and the village of nightmare folder, and I'm still getting the error that it can't find it.

      Delete
    4. Well, I believe it would be put into the system32 folder, but if that's not working, I'm not sure. Most problems I've seen on the internet involved people using the VX RTP instead of the XP RTP, but if you're using the latter and it's also not accepting the file in either the system32 folder or RPG Maker folder, I'm afraid I'm stumped. Sorry.

    1. I'm thinking it's some problem with the Japanese RPG Maker RTP? Try either re-download and installing the Japanese version, or going to the English site and downloading the English version of the RTP. Make sure that you're downloading the XP version instead of the VX or any other.

  8. where in that japanese gobbledegook website will I find the patch? I get it's the 1.05 link, but on the next page, I can't figure out how to download.

    1. From the getuploader site, after you click on the 1.05 link, enter the password (akuoti) in the textbox that has 'ダウンロードパスワード' to the left of it and click the button. You should then be redirected to a similar page with a button with 'ダウンロード'. Hit that and you'll be directed to a page which should start the download.

Please note, you only need the patch with the Japanese version. I've already patched the releases I've been using for the English translation.

  9. talking about patch should i patch to 1.05 after patching the english translation or before?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Neither. You only need the patch for playing the Japanese version.

The English release doesn't require you to patch it, as I've already included the fixes from 1.05 with it. Trying to patch it will likely screw up the translation as you'll be overwriting several files I translated and localized.

  10. Just to make sure I got it right, the steps are:
    1. extract game
    2. extract patch 1.05, overwriting all
    3. extract english patch 0.71, overwriting all

    1. No, steps 1 and 2 are totally unnecessary unless you want to play the Japanese version.

The download I have on this blog isn't a patch, it's the translated game itself. All you need to do is download it, extract it, and then play (although you need RPG Maker XP RTP installed beforehand).

If you want to play the Japanese version, you need to go to the creator's website, download that version, and then follow those first two steps you outlined and everything should work dandy (provided you're in Japanese locale and have the RTP).

  11. Ok........ I am getting an error message when trying to start the game that is not stated in the other comments.. I do not know why I can not play it.... "File Audio/BGM/064-slow07 could not be found"... What is up with this... that file is not with the game and I had to place an entrance file too for some reason....

    1. Do you have the RPG Maker XP RTP installed? I seem to recall that many of the various BGM and sound effects are stored in that.

  12. I'm having an issue where I can't use the down arrow to do anything, for movement or menu selection. It happened after the Tsubame went berserk, and I can;t figure out how to fix it.

    1. Someone else noted a similar problem, and after looking around, it seems like it's a problem with the RPG Maker engine. Try restarting the game. If that doesn't work, try uninstalling, and then re-installing the RPG Maker XP RTP.

any idea on when the next update might be?

    1. There shouldn't be any more updates, I finished the game.

...Is what I'd like to say, but I've recently seen that there was an update for the game on the creator's site for some after stories of nearly every character. So, I can't.

I haven't checked out the text, but it seems to be a fairly lengthy update going from the new CGs. I don't know when I'll be able to finish all of them.

    2. haha, I originally asked the question because I had an older version of your translation efforts, and didn't know you'd released a 1.1.
but it's good to know you're thinking of tackling the new stuff.

  15. my save file got corrupted. does anyone happen to have their save file for me to use? i was at the point where the familiars JUST started to come -- around 35% corruption.

my current save file gives me a line 82 script EOTF error, or something like that. it still shows the date and time played on the save selection screen, but it just won't load due to that error.

    thanks in advance!

    1. I don't have save data to that exact point, I don't even remember where I left off, actually. But my save data is a bit into things so you wouldn't have to necessarily start over from the beginning if you want to use it: http://www.mediafire.com/?c4u77rot9u58joy

  26. I have this problem where the game acts as if I'n holding down the down key. Even closing and opening the game doesn't help. any ideas?

    ReplyDelete
  27. Wow, talk about late to the party.

How nice it is to have a little closure. I actually passed over this game when I first tried it over a year ago (has it been that long?) cause the walkthrough wasn't up and sheer amount of trial-and-error didn't make the CGs worthwhile.

Nice story, but wonky ending. I don't know if the writer forgot or changed things late in development but the whole exorcist-vs-demon king-vs-succubi thing really made no difference whatsoever (the whole dragon scene/NPC could have been removed). Most of the post-game stories were also out of left field but I guess thats just the dev team having fun at that point. (Why no cowgirl scenes?!)
