Village of Nightmare is a short indie eroge of sorts made using RPG Maker XP for the gameplay engine and 3D Custom Girl for the creation of character models. Despite being made with RPG Maker, there isn't any turn-based combat. Originally in Japanese, I decided to try my hand at translating it into English. The purpose of this blog is to host all materials related to that effort.

The game itself is set in a fantasy world with various monsters and demons. You play a character who is soon corrupted and transformed into a succubus, and then given a mission to go to a nearby village and transform all of its residents into succubi as well.

I've finished translating the game into English, but it's honestly a rough translation due to my amateurish skills. You can see further details, and/or download it to try it yourself over here. Please note, the download is not a patch, it's a full standalone release. As such, you don't need to download the original version unless you want to play the game in Japanese.

If you are curious about the original version for one reason or another, you can download it here on the creator's website (password is "akuoti").

I'm not going to be accepting any donations for this work, but if for some reason you want to help with the translation, you can do so by playing it and if you spot any grammatical errors, text that sounds odd and you think should be reworded in some fashion, or any missing text or bugs in areas that should otherwise be translated, you can posting them here on the blog for me to attempt to fix.
rabidchibi0http://www.blogger.com/profile/03552325474312497003noreply@blogger.com53tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7118823946717362263.post-72201496684517114892020-12-25T18:58:00.000-08:002013-03-19T22:20:14.814-07:00English Translation v2.1Mediafire
Depositfiles

This is a complete translation of Village of Nightmare, including the new end game content. The full English-localized game is included in the download, no patching required. This game DOES require that you have the RPG Maker XP RTP installed to play it (make sure you download the XP version, not the VX version). However, it should no longer require that you have your computer set to Japanese locale.

Due to the game's obtuse interface, I highly recommend you use a walkthrough unless you like aimless, boring wandering to click on everybody you can think of to try and advance the story. I've posted such a walkthrough over here and I've tried to keep it fairly spoiler-free, but it does still contain some.

If during play you run across any errors, text or programming, please go ahead and post about them and I'll see if I can't try and fix them. The format of the game does not allow me to spell check my work easily, and it leaves things quite open to mistakes.

Finally, to all the people who have already helped with spotting errors in the text, of special note being KMZ who gave me a hefty word document full of them with notation for easier use... thank you. You made this project quite a bit more polished than it would have otherwise been.rabidchibi0http://www.blogger.com/profile/03552325474312497003noreply@blogger.com28tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7118823946717362263.post-44951600511636712632020-12-25T18:57:00.000-08:002012-08-30T19:10:15.810-07:00WalkthroughThis is a (somewhat rough in areas) guide to getting through Village of Nightmare's story. The game is actually quite non-linear in some ways, as you can trigger a number of events in various orders, so the format of this shall be character by character, and I'll mention what is required to continue through their events.

You'll start the game in a cave. You can click around, but you need to enter deeper into it to trigger the next part of the story. When you're back in control, you'll be in the nearby town of Joyville.

Souffle (Innkeeper)

Her corruption can be started right when you enter the village, but can only be completed a bit later in the game. It's a good idea to talk to her right away, as she's your main save point throughout the game. She'll give you various information during different stages of the story, usually when new characters have arrived in town. Talking with her is important as her bits of information are often required for some of the characters to show up (although in some cases, her info dialogue will simply be skipped if you advance story).

When you have finished the corruption for Kukuru and Kukuri, she can finally be turned into a succubus. Just talk to her at night, and watch the scene. As a bonus, you can later talk to her during the day for another sex scene after this event.

Mint (Tavern Girl)

Like Souffle, her corruption can be started right away, but can only finished later. What you need to do is talk to her at night to view a small scene, and then talk to her again during the day to trigger an event where you work at the bar.

After this, here scenes can vary a little depending on how far along you've gotten Kukuru and Kukuri's corruption, as once you reach a certain level with them, Mint will have a scene where she shows off some some new clothes she bought off them. However, while that scene isn't really important, to trigger Mint's final corruption scene you do need to almost completely corrupt Kukuru and Kukuri. (To be more specific, you need to talk with Kukuru and Kukuri in the plaza after the second bedroom scene at night.) So, after you're basically done with Kukuru and Kukuri, talk with Mint during the day, and it should trigger a scene where she gets transformed, completing her corruption.

Of course, after she's been turned into a succubus, there are two more scenes involving her in a main way, both of which involve you working again part-time at night. The first can be done any time after Mint is corrupted (and is important for corrupting Pastel), and the second can be done after all of the bar-goers have been turned into succubi. To trigger them, just click on the north door in the tavern during the night, and you should be given the option to work part-time.

Kukuru and Kukuri (Peddler Siblings)

These two will show up along the Dagger once you've started a bit into Mint's corruption and worked part-time at the tavern once. Talk with Souffle at the inn and hear about their arrival, then go to the town plaza during the day to find them. Talk with them there, and then choose "No", which will result in them going back to the inn. Talk with them there at night, and view a scene, then go check the restroom and choose "Yes". After this is done, talk with Kukuru during the day and receive a silly quest.

Once you've received the quest, go to the exit of the town and go to the nearby forest. Be sure to check the sign to make your life easier, otherwise the squirrels are going to be a pain. You'll need to get to the center of the forest, click on the tree, and then run back to the entrance without getting hit by a squirrel otherwise you'll get sent back to the inn and need to go through the forest all over again. (Save by the tree and just reload if you get caught, as it's faster.) Once you've got back the goods, give it to Kukuru.

At this point, you need to continue fapping and blowing Kukuru at various points. It's pretty easy to work through, but if you're having trouble, he's the exact process. After you've given Kukuru the goods, wait until night and then check the restroom at the inn. Talk to Kukuru after that in the plaza during the day, and then check the restroom during the day after that small scene. Go to your bedroom during the night and talk to Kukuru, and then wait until day and check the restroom again. After that, check your bedroom again and talk to Kukuru, and then after THAT click on the bedroom door of the siblings during the night for a small scene.

After all of that's done, Kukuru should be in your bedroom during the day. Talk to him and complete both his and Kukuri's corruption.

Dagger (Dancer)

Dagger shows up along with the peddler siblings once you've started a bit into Mint's corruption and worked part-time at the tavern once. She'll be located at the tavern during the night. She doesn't take very long unlike Kukuru and Kukuri, but she does require that you first have Mint transformed into a succubus (which in itself requires Kukuru and Kukuri to be transformed into succubi too). Once that requirement is fulfilled, you're all set.

Talk with Dagger during the night twice to see a small scene where Mea dances for a bit, which makes Dagger ask for lessons. She'll show up at the tavern during the day after that, and if you have Mint corrupted into a succubus, all you need to do is talk with her during the day to complete her corruption.

If you talk with her during the day before Mint is a succubi, Mea will be cocked blocked by an onlooker Mint. If this happens, you need to talk with her again during the night for her to show up during the day again.

Metallica (Blacksmith)

Metallica can be corrupted any time after Kukuru and Kukuri have arrived in town. Simply keep talking with her in her house, going in and out each time you speak with her, and you should eventually trigger a number of different scenes involve Mea 'helping' Metallica. Eventually, this will lead to Metallica's corruption, transformation. Very simple.

Metallica is important for triggering scenes with a lot of other characters, so it's a good idea to do her when it's possible.

Pastel (Blond Bar Patron)

Pastel can be corrupted and transformed when both Mint and Dagger have been turned into a succubi. To do so, simply do more part-time work at the tavern by clicking on the north door in the building at night to see a scene with Mint serving some special beer to Pastel. After this scene, if you've corrupted Dagger, just talk with Pastel to trigger a small bit of dialogue where Mea instructs Pastel to go to her room in the inn. When you go there at night, Pastel will be waiting. Just talk to her to complete her corruption.

Theresia, Barton, and Claude (Sister A, Villager B, and Villager C)

Theresia can start to be corrupted once Pastel has been turned into a succubus. Although, in terms of scene flow, it's better if you talk to Theresia beforehand, hear about the brawls taking place in the plaza, talk to the two men outside in the plaza, and then talk to Theresia again, otherwise her involvement after Pastel's corruption doesn't really make as much sense.

Regardless, once Pastel has been corrupted, you should find Theresia outside in the plaza trying to break up another fight. After you talk with any of the people involved and few the scene, Theresia will start showing up at the tavern at night. Talk to her once at the bar at night, and then once at church during the day. At this point, you need to have completed Kukuru and Kukuri's corruption to continue with Theresia. Once they're done, talk with Theresia at the bar again to view another scene. Go and talk to her again at the bar for a third scene at the tavern. Once you view those bar scenes, go to the church during the day and talk with Theresia to view yet another scene. Once THAT is done, go into the house right next to Erdin (the white armored guy guarding the entrance to the northern part of the village) and walk into the room with Theresia and Claude to view the final scene for Theresia's corruption.

Tsubame and Mayfair (Adventurer Duo)

These two will show up once Metallica and Souffle have been transformed into succubi. Talk to Souffle at the inn to hear about them, and then should find them outside of Metallica's house. Approaching them will trigger a scene. Talk to Metallica afterward, and leave to watch another scene. Afterward, familiars will wander about the town at night, and will damage you if you touch them. If you receive too much damage, the game will end.

Once you're in control again, go down the stairs in the inn to the hot spring, and get near Tsubame and Mayfair to trigger an extremely short scene. Once that's done wait until night and then go outside to the inn's south side and talk with Tsubame to trigger a couple scenes. After this, Tsubame goes berserk outside when it's night and if you run into her without preparing it's an instant gameover.

Souffle will talk to you as you down the hall, and after you click through the text, go to Metallica's to get a shield. While carrying the shield, your walk speed will be reduced, so be careful as it won't save you from Tsubame quite yet. Before you can continue, you need to go to the church and talk with Father Moscow (or Mother Mural) to get the shield blessed. Finally, intentionally run into Tsubame and you'll view another scene to finish up this part of the corruption.

Talk with Mayfair afterwards to receive a quest to hunt down some rats, which is fairly short. Take the spoils to Mayfair after you finish her task, and Tsubame and her should start spending a lot of their time in the hot spring.

At this point, you need all of the bar patrons, and Arud (the southern guard) to be corrupted. Once this is done, talk with Tsubame and Mayfair in the hot spring (during the day), and then talk with Souffle right afterward to trigger a scene in the hot spring. Talk with Souffle in the bath and then leave the hot spring, then view a barrage of scenes which will end in both Tsubame and Mayfair's corruption, and another scene with the Exorcist.

Daisy (Pink-haired Bar Patron)

Daisy can be corrupted after the familiars have started wandering about the village (which will happen after the first scene with Tsubame and Mayfair at Metallica's place), and Pastel has been transformed into a succubus.

To do so, it's rather simple. Just talk with her at the bar at night, then go and find her in front of Kukuru and Kukuri during the day and talk with her, and then talk with her again at the tavern at night. Once that's done, just go to your room in the inn, and she'll be waiting. Talk with her, and she'll be corrupted.

Randy and Sepia (Shopkeepers)

To corrupt these two, you need for Mint and Daisy to have been transformed into succubi. Once that's done, talk to Randy at the bar and you'll view a scene. Once you see it, go to the shop (the building north of the inn), and talk to Sepia to view a short bit of dialogue. After that's done, just talk to Randy at the tavern, and you'll view a scene that will end with their corruption.

Stone (Novelist)

Stone is the green-haired guy in the house just above the tavern. He's Daisy's brother, and as such, it should be no surprise that you need to transform her into a succubus before you can corrupt Stone. In addition to Daisy, you also need Theresia, Randy and Sepia to have been transformed into succubi to see his corruption.

Once you've met those requirements, just go into the aforementioned house, and you'll view a long scene that will result in Stone's corruption.

Arud (Southern Guard)

Arud can be corrupted as soon as all of the tavern-goers (Mint, Dagger, Pastel, Theresia, Randy, and Daisy) have become succubi. Just talk with him at night, and you'll trigger a scene that involves his transformation.

Brigitte and Moscow (Sister B and Priest)

Brigitte (and through her, Moscow) can't be fully corrupted until you've finished Theresia's corruption. Once you view the third chatting scene in the bar with Theresia, Brigitte can be progressed further, but you won't be able to completely finish their corruption until Theresia has been transformed into a succubus. See her section for details.

The exact flow is this: Once you talked with Brigitte once or twice, you need to talk with Chris (the man playing the organ in the church). Talk with Brigitte again after this, and then leave. Come back to the church at night, and then click on Brigitte in her bed to hear her sleep-talk. At this point, you need to have talked with Moscow at night at least once, (although talking to him too many times at night will lead to an early ending, so be careful). Next, talk with Brigitte during the day again, which will result in a slightly longer chat, and Brigitte waiting in your inn room at night. Just talk with her there, viewing the resulting scene, and then talk with Moscow at church during the day, and the corruption will be complete.

On a side note, this means you can potentially complete this before finishing Tsubame and Mayfair's corruption, which will lead to a small change of dialogue during one part of that section of the game...

Also, as I mentioned, talking to Moscow too many times at night before his corruption will lead to an early (bad?) ending. However, it's worth it to save and then take the time to view it.

Brothel

Once Tsubame and Mayfair, as well as Randy and Sepia have all been transformed into succubi, talking to Souffle in the inn will result in her telling you that Kukuru and Kukuri have opened up a brothel at Randy and Sepia's shop during the night.

There's not much to see initially, but once you've corrupted the four children, entering the brothel at night will trigger a sex scene.

John, David, Kokomo, and Sherry (Four Children)

Once the brothel has been opened, the four children you can see around the village can be corrupted. Just talk to Kukuru at the peddler sibling's usual spot in the plaza to trigger a scene. After this, go to the warehouse in the southeast part of town to view one more scene, and their corruption will be complete.

Slayer (Swordsman)

Slayer is the swordsman who sometimes appears by the tree next to Metallica's house. He'll have some extra dialogue after you've started to corrupt Metallica (and he'll disappear for a while after she's been changed into a succubus), but you can only really deal with him and see some sex scenes after Metallica's been transformed, and Tsubame's berserk rampage around the village has been dealt with.

After that, a swordswoman can be found by the tree, and talking with her will trigger a minor scene. After viewing it, try going into Metallica's house to see a sex scene. Once you see it, Slayer will be walking around town at night, and talking with her will result in her cutting you up (which won't result in an instant game over like Tsubame did, just damage like the familiars cause).

Slayer's main scenario can be finished up once you've corrupted Brigitte and Moscow. Once they're succubi, just go to Metallica's during the day, and you'll view another scene. Afterward, <s>Slayer</s>Daiya will no longer attack you during the night.

As an extra, after Erdin has been corrupted, if you go to Metallica's at night, you'll view a date scene where there's a bit of corruption play between Metallica and Daiya, as Daiya will lose even more of her masculinity.

Dragon

This isn't actually a character to corrupt, but it's an important section of the game. It should come naturally, really, but in case you're having trouble activating the scene, let me run down the requirements for it. There are two triggers. The first is checking a specific barrier stone which will cause Mea to realize she needs the demon blade. (To check this barrier stone, you need to get into the north part of the village, which in itself requires you to have corrupted Tsubame and Mayfair, as well as made peace with Slayer/Daiya.) The second is simply that you talk to Metallica during the day after you do the first trigger.

After you do those two things, Metallica should be waiting in the inn during the day, and talking to her will result in this scene.

Note that after this, there will be seven fragments you'll need to collect in the south part of town and bring to Metallica before you can advance to the final parts of the story. You can only pick them up at night too, so be careful of the familiars.

Erdin (Guard Captain)

Erdin can be corrupted once you've viewed the dragon scene, collected the demon blade fragments, reforged the sword, and then destroyed the barrier stones in the north section of the village. Once this is done, the guards' office will be open. Entering it at night will prompt a scene, and once it's over you'll leave automatically. Erdin will be outside of the assembly hall, talk to him to start a game where you need to reach Erdin within the time limit without being caught by the guards or getting hit by a trap (which can be seen on the ground as dark stains). It isn't particularly hard, but losing will result in a game over, so be sure to save before you talk to him. Once you reach Erdin in the deepest part of building, you'll view a scene which ends in his transformation.

Final Corruptions and the Exorcist

The final corruptions and the end of the game can be done any time after Erdin has been transformed into a succubus. Just talk to Erdin, Mayfair or Tsubame and then choose yes to begin the last section of the game. It will show bunches of scenes, which will eventually lead into a battle, and then contest between Mea and the Exorcist. (You will be given the option to save before you start the contest, which you may want to take advantage of.) There are three games: a quiz involving mosaic'd pictures, a game of tag, and a game of rock, paper, scissors.

The quiz involves four questions, and then one more if you got all of the previous questions right. The answers are 1, 4, 3, 4, and then 1. Correctly answering all five questions will net you 125 points.

The tag game should be fairly simple since you've already dealt with two similar games already. The Exorcist will get a head start, and you will be on just the 'fast' walk speed at the start, but don't worry. Just follow the path, and when you hit the first ruins, try going left, then right and up for the straightest route. Once you're halfway, Mea will switch to the 'fastest' walk speed, and you'll soon run into the choice of going through another ruins area (which the Exorcist should be running through when you get there), or a straight path filled with familiars. Go through the ruins unless you're extremely confident with dodging them. At this point, you should be able to run and catch the Exorcist either in the ruins, or just outside as he runs down the dirt path to the finish line. You need to click on him to catch him, not just run into him. As long as you catch him before he reaches the finish line, you'll get a full 100 points.

The rock, paper, scissors game is the worst of the three, as it's entirely driven by chance. There's no strategy. That said, as long as you got full points in both of the previous games, you'll still win even if you get 0 points here. You don't get anything for beating the Exorcist with full points, you just need to have enough points in total, so there's no need to worry.

If you don't get 220 points or more, the Exorcist cleanses you, and you get a 'good ending' of the two of you teaming up against Amuni.

If you get 220 points or more, you beat the Exorcist, which leads to his corruption, and the ending.rabidchibi0http://www.blogger.com/profile/03552325474312497003noreply@blogger.com60tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7118823946717362263.post-46250248106397414672020-12-25T18:56:00.000-08:002012-02-22T09:27:43.995-08:00Common Problems and SolutionsDue to an increasing amount of questions regarding various errors or whatnot, I'm including this troubleshooting post. If your problem is not covered under these few sections, or the sparse solutions aren't working, please post about it, and give a bit of detail on what exactly you're doing, and what exactly is happening.

1) I'm getting some error when I start it up about RGSS****.dll/RGSS RTP not being found. What do?

Something is wrong with the RTP. You either did not install it, did not install it correctly, or it's having some other fruity problem. First, make SURE that you have the RPG Maker XP RTP installed, not the VX or any other version. If it's still not working, un-install it, and then download it again and re-install it. If it's still not working, google the exact RGSS file that's not being found and you'll likely find a few topics about it, and also likely to find an upload of that missing dll, which you can then download and put with the rest of the files of the RTP.

2) For some reason, the compression files are coming out as gibberish / the game text isn't showing up / It's all in Japanese.

I really have no idea what going on with this stuff. Try to give an an explanation on what you're doing and what's happening with as much detail as possible.

Also, just to be safe let me say this: The English release of this game needs no patch. If you're applying the Japanese 1.05 patch after downloading the English release on this site you're doing it wrong.

3) Something happened and now my character is stuck moving in one direction and/or I can't move in a specific direction!

This is apparently a bug with the RPG Maker engine. Restart the game. If that doesn't work, uninstall and than reinstall the RTP. If that doesn't work, try restarting your computer. If THAT doesn't work, I've got nothing.

4) I can't get away from those <strike></strike>squirrels!

Click on the sign near the forest entrance, take the irritant. It will remove almost every single squirrel (except for one at the end, so be careful) that pops up in front of your exit path, with only the ones chasing you left. Just don't lag and you'll be fine.
Yes... that's a bug I don't know how to fix without completely rewriting the conversation system in place. Download this. It's a modified data folder with the 'happy end' scene deleted from it, so the game should move on to the next event. Don't delete/overwrite your original data folder unless you don't ever want to view that scene again without downloading the game again.rabidchibi0http://www.blogger.com/profile/03552325474312497003noreply@blogger.com20tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7118823946717362263.post-80583520288691061412015-12-09T01:25:00.001-08:002015-12-09T01:25:54.894-08:00Regarding Village of Nightmare 2Hey, been a while. I largely ignore the e-mail account attached to this blog nowadays, but I do check it every so often, and thanks to that I noticed a couple comments about the sequel to this little game. (As an aside, the reason I've never actually responded to any of the other comments on this blog after I finished the translation was that I couldn't help anymore, or the answer had already been given.)

Regardless, when I popped back in to check out this new spangled sequel, I played it for a half an hour or so and thought it was pretty good so I left a message on the "News" tab to express my interest in translating it should any of the people who let me know about it pop back around. Since then I've taken a little bit more time to actually play through the rest of it, and I'm sadly not very impressed.

So, to be clear: I very much doubt I'll actually translate Village of Nightmare 2.

Why? Well...

The reasons for this are myriad, but I have to say that it's mainly because the content is lacking. The writing itself is pretty much like before, there are some neat things they did with the story, a lot of old characters return or cameo in an amusing fashion, some old annoyances were removed... But unfortunately many NEW annoyances were added, yet more old annoyances are still there, there are very few CGs compared to the previous game, and most irritating of all, a lot of the corruption was pretty much skipped over.

To be fair, I might very well have missed some stuff. Without the editor program to look into what's actually there, I just played through to whatever seemed most expedient, so I might have missed extra stuff, or missable scenes. I kind of doubt it, overall, but it's certainly possible. That said, even ignoring the segments that seemed to have skipped points, the corruption in general happened way too fast. I thought this was fine in the beginning since several corruptions in the beginning of the first game weren't exactly slow going, but in this one people went from normal to succubus in about a handful of sentences at times.

Not to say that there weren't slow corruptions, or nice scenes. The times CGs were used were usually okay, and the school corruption was great (even if it also included one of the worst instances of skipping, with the teacher's corruption happening off screen), but in general things had no sense of drawn out tension. There were some decently drawn out corruption scenes near the end, but by that point about 80% of the place had already been finished.

The actual battle sections (as in RPG gameplay from RPG Maker) were pretty terrible too, probably the biggest annoyance introduced to the game beyond the content. They weren't awful as far as standard RPG stuff goes, but who the hell is actually playing it for something like that? They added nothing. The end dodge-person game was even more annoying than the one in the first game too. The story that was present was kind of weird at times too, like a section during one of the battle parts that involved a child being found, then ending up killed by a beast that was hounding you for a while. Some sad music played, he want "O-Onee-chan... blarg", and then absolutely no one proceeded to give a shit. I can only assume it was some sort of joke or meme.

But really, most of the gripes are sort of minor compared to content point. I know people's feelings on it were pretty mixed at best, but I actually did enjoy the CG art from the first game, and the fact that there were so few included in the game, on top of the sex scenes being very loose until the end, left me pretty disappointed.

There are other things to praise, or complain about with the game, but I won't go into them. I've already ranted about it long enough. The bottom line for it all is that I don't really feel motivated to translate the game even if I had the free time for it (which is incredibly iffy). Perhaps if an enhanced addition for the game pops up I'll reconsider, but as it stands, it's not likely to happen.

That's it from me.
rabidchibi0http://www.blogger.com/profile/03552325474312497003noreply@blogger.com22tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7118823946717362263.post-27787386567448770462012-08-16T13:11:00.001-07:002012-08-16T13:11:49.234-07:00The EndAgain.

Here's the English v2.0 release. And, if you haven't seen it already, do check out the character popularity poll results.

All in all, there's a good chunk of new text in the end-game scene room, but you might end up disappointed in some cases since many of them are extremely short. There are tidbits of information about the VoN world here and there though that I found quite interesting. On the matter of the Mea/Mare name, since the polls on ended up favoring the former, I decided not to go back and edit her name. I did add in a little info on the matter in Mea's character profile that wasn't there originally, however.

Anyway. Now that that's all finished up, I'll probably be sticking around for a week, potentially fix any reported bugs/grammatical errors, and then leave and never look back. This project ended up being far longer and more involved than I initially figured that one bored afternoon when I started. Honestly, I'm not particularly proud of the work, because I played fast and loose with the translation more times than I would have liked (both for the new content and the older stuff), but in this case it came from a sort of desperation that if I didn't I'd never finish it.

I did have some fun, but this has been an exhausting endeavor, and I'm glad it's finished. Again. It's not exactly the most polished project, but regardless of my feelings on the matter, I hope you've enjoyed it.

Sincerely,

So, yes. Metallica and Mea are in second and third place, but the cow girl has a rather wide lead over them. Congratulations, cow girl! You're the most popular girl in the English community of Village of Nightmare.

Incidentally, the most popular girl in the Japanese community was apparently Daisy. One of the creators had a poll that ended shortly after the last edition was released, and she came out on the top (with the cow girl in third place!) and this image was posted:
A tad later than I'd hoped, but I've finished up the last bit of text. I still need to go over all of the new stuff to proofread, as well as make sure there aren't any programming errors with the scene replays (which I know there at least SOME I need to fix), but I believe I'll be releasing version 2 of Village of Nightmare sometime tomorrow (08/16/12).

Also, as the poll on the right can tell you, there's a very large majority in favor of just keeping the main character's name as Mea, so I'll be doing that. Sorry, people who voted for Mare!

EDIT:

On another note, I've also decided to end the character popularity poll today. I figure since I'm hopefully going to be done with this project by tomorrow (barring a short extended stint to fix any errors), I should wrap up everything I've left sort of hanging. If you haven't voted for your favorite character, be sure to do so be today!rabidchibi0http://www.blogger.com/profile/03552325474312497003noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7118823946717362263.post-1918667967594110022012-08-10T13:32:00.001-07:002012-08-10T13:39:13.521-07:00Progress [08/10/12]So, tomorrow's the deadline. Or was. You see, I've been unable to work on this thing the last week (I didn't have access to the PC with the necessary data/programs on it) due to some family matters, and while I have gotten some work done previous to that, I don't really think I can finish the remaining stories in the set time limit.

Anyway, it's vexing, but given that I original set the limit with the thought of having a relatively free summer, I decided I'd rather extend it a bit than give up on it due to outside circumstances. I'll be adding six more days to the time limit, since there are eight different after stories left.

tl;dr: New deadline. August 17th. Damn it.
The translation is moving, if slowly. It's been a few days, so I just decided to post a report despite nothing really important coming to mind. I think there's something like... 13 more stories to go? I've sort of been avoiding the longer ones though, so the last few stories will probably take a bit longer than many of these did.

Looks like there's an overwhelming majority that like Mea more than Mare, so I probably won't be changing that unless there's a landslide of some sort before my efforts are finished. On that same tangent, I'll probably be ending the character poll in August too. I'm a bit amused at how many people voted for the cow...

Funny thing I ran across a while ago is a link to this blog on one of the creators' twitter. I suppose it shouldn't be surprising given how I link to his blog, but I found it rather amusing.

Anyway. More progress. And I've recently finished Mea's after stories/profile, which confirmed something that I suspected since the beginning, but ignored. The fact being that Mea's name is actually 'Mare', not 'Mea'. Her name is メア in Japanese, which I just transcribed literally since I thought Mare sounded a bit silly. Still, the author confirmed it, telling the reader that the name came from Nightmare (I thought it was just referring to the mythical creature since it had connections to succubi).

The reason I bring this up is I'm now wondering if I should go back and change her name throughout the game. It'd be a pain in the ass, honestly, and I don't even really like the name, but it doesn't particularly feel right ignoring the fact that it's her name given the creator confirmed it.

What do you guys think? (I've now added a poll on this.)

Bear in mind this isn't something I'd bother with until I'd either have finished up the translation or gave up on August 11th. It's tedious work, and wouldn't really have any impact on my current translation efforts. The main thing is whether people care at all, and the possibility that I might miss some 'Mea-to-Mare' replacements, which would leave the odd Mea in for more dreaded quality control.

Regardless of that... the progress report is below the cut.
Okay, so here's the rundown. I tried easing myself back into this in May and failed to do much of anything. It's not so much a lack of free time now as it is a total lack of motivation. I've realized that I've just pretty much lost all interest in
translating this, as despite numerous attempts at working on it, I've
only barely been able to translate a word or two.

I had fun with this game before, but now it's more like a burden
hanging onto my shoulders. Thing is, I'd really hate to leave it
unfinished given I do like a few of the afterstories, and as I said at
the beginning, they're really not very long individually. So, I sat down today and
forced myself to complete two afterstories and finish up half of another one I'd
gotten down way back before I drifted away from it. It wasn't really fun, but I feel it's something I need to do so I can just close this project once and for all and move on.

So, basically, I've decided to set a deadline for myself. Setting up a routine is important for all things you want to actually work, so I'm going to translate at least an afterstory a day from this point on. Minus the ones I've already completed, that leaves 28 different afterstories (as some characters have more than one), and 28 days for me to finish up this game.

If I don't finish it in 28 days, then I'm going to have to give up, as this is my last ditch effort to actually get my lazy ass to complete this game. So, it's either going to be done or bust by the 11th of August. It'd be nice if I could finish it before then, but let's not get too ahead of ourselves here. Even if I fail to finish it completely, I'll still release it with whatever I have finished translating, so you'll at least get something at that point.

Anyway, below my ramblings, I have the standard progress report. I'm not sure if I'm going to be making too many of them this time around, but given how I want to set up a routine, maybe I will.
Well, fuck all of that because apparently the creators decided to finish up that incomplete recollection room and do a bunch of after stories for all the other characters while they were at it!

Most of the extra stories are pretty short, but altogether they're somewhat lengthy. Considering I also need to reprogram some of the stuff into a English locale-usable format and some other stuff, it'll still probably take a while.rabidchibi0http://www.blogger.com/profile/03552325474312497003noreply@blogger.com14tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7118823946717362263.post-80299631857354117192012-02-15T18:28:00.000-08:002012-02-15T18:29:25.550-08:00And that's a wrap.

Well, the English release is out, and hopefully finished barring any error fixes, so this project's complete. It was an enjoyable, if longer experience than I had initially expected, but oh well. I can't really say that it's that great of a translation, but I did the best I could, and I do feel I've learned a few things from it (not the least of which is to never, ever fucking use RPG Maker XP to make a game), so in the end it was a good experience.

I'm not planning on doing anymore game translations, nor am I really going to be updating or sticking around this blog beyond a couple weeks to oversee any possible fixes, but the internet's an interesting place, so who knows what'll happen.

Regardless, for everyone following the project: thanks for the support. It helped move me along in my lazy pace. I hope you and everyone else enjoy(ed) the game.rabidchibi0http://www.blogger.com/profile/03552325474312497003noreply@blogger.com10tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7118823946717362263.post-59523545708461038072012-02-14T21:38:00.000-08:002012-02-14T21:38:12.330-08:00Progress [02/14/02]The translation is finished.

I was planning on wrapping up all the programming and whatnot today and then releasing it, but it ended up not quite working out that way. Instead I'll just say that if all goes well I'll have it finished and out sometime tomorrow [02/15/02]. I can't guarantee it, of course, but that's the plan, and I hope to stick to it.rabidchibi0http://www.blogger.com/profile/03552325474312497003noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7118823946717362263.post-55148756518964856262012-02-13T18:13:00.000-08:002012-02-13T18:13:36.558-08:00Progress [02/13/12]Right. I've spent some more of my free time on this and have sort of gotten back into the swing of things. The Exorcist is the only one left now, and I've started on him, so it shouldn't be an incredibly long time before I'm finished with the translation.

With that said, I've been looking around at the programming and I noticed a few things I'd like to take care of before I actually put out a release. To be more detailed, once the Exorcist (and developer/recollection room) scene is done, I'm going over the new parts of the script a bit to try and edit any typos or whatnot that I find, and after that I'm going to see if I can't fix a few errors (like a few CGs not showing up properly during one of Theresia's sex scenes), and after THAT I need to see if I can't connect an after story of some sort of sex scene between the Exorcist, Mea and Amuni. (Do note, I'm not sure this scene is actually complete, since the developer left it unattached to their main game in any way, it's just sort of some floating text in the developer room along with some unused CGs you can find in the pictures folder, but we'll see, yeah?)

tl;dr: There's more work I need to do after the translation, so when that's done it's not going to be released right away. Just so you know.
Honestly, the date scene took a lot more work than I expected, since I spent a lot of time fruitlessly thinking of how I could retain as much of the... subtleties, I suppose you could say, of the speech changes. Sadly, I ended up not being able to translate much of the nuances of Daiya switching between masculine and feminine styles of speech that great, so it falls a bit flat in areas.

Next up are the final corruptions and the Exorcist scenes, then the translation'll be done. (The developer room isn't going to take more than a handful of minutes when I finally get to it, and the recollection room is more a matter of copy+paste and then a bit of programming.)

I've had a little bit more time to waste these past few days, and thus I've made a good chunk of progress from my near standstill the past week or two. Still a long ways to go, mind, since the final corruptions scenes are practically the size of all the other scenes from 0.7 onwards put together, but it's still progress. Also took about a half an hour to go over the list of errors KMZ helpfully provided me and edited those in, so the script has become a lot less error-ridden.

Due to the fact that I can't actually give an accurate percentage of what's left thanks to the shitty format of RPG Maker, this all basically off my guessing, so I'm not going to be giving hard numbers. Instead, I'll be noting each corruption person or group, and how far along they are. There are some miscellaneous other scenes not about sex or corruption per se, but I've also included those too.
I actually got pretty sidetracked these past few days (partly RL, partly translation hiccups), so I didn't get much work done, but looking on my work on a whole, I decided to do a v0.6 release anyway. And on that note, v0.6 has my favorite corruption in the game. There are plenty of good ones, but it was definitely the one I liked the most.
Things are moving along nicely. The last few scenes are pretty long, but I don't expect it'll be more than 1-3 days before I'm finished with another third of the game. Although, I'm not sure if I should do a v0.6 release at that point, or wait until I'm done to put out another download.
Miscellaneous translation: Mostly complete

As a measure of length, it should be noted I consider all the corruptions from Theresia to Slayer to be another third of the game, and Erdin and the final corruptions (including the Exorcist) to be the last third, as they're very long. The developer room is fairly small, and the recollection room will just involve copy+pasting all the sex scene's text (and also connecting it to an playable path, as it doesn't seem that the creator finished implementing it into the game).rabidchibi0http://www.blogger.com/profile/03552325474312497003noreply@blogger.com8tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7118823946717362263.post-29140894624133603932011-12-30T00:52:00.000-08:002012-01-02T23:45:45.238-08:00Progress [12/30/11]This is for people curious on how far along I am, and how much is left to work translate. I'm pretty much going to be copy+pasting this thing every time. Although for this update, it's good to note that I consider the Tsubame and Mayfair section to be one of the longer corruptions in the game, and I'm surprised at how fast I've been getting through it.

Anyway, due to the fact that I can't actually give an accurate percentage of what's left thanks to the shitty format of RPG Maker, this all basically off my guessing, so I'm not going to be giving hard numbers. Instead, I'll be noting each corruption person or group, and how far along they are. There are some miscellaneous other scenes not about sex or corruption per se, but I've also included those too.
EDIT: This patch is now outdated. Please refer to the v2.0 release post.
This is a complete translation of Village of Nightmare. The full English-localized game is included in the download. This game requires that you have the RPG Maker XP RTP installed to play it (make sure you download the XP version, not the VX version).

If you've played either the v0.3 or v0.6 releases and want to continue from your saves, you're going to need to move 宿屋の娘04(眼鏡なし).png and/or 宿屋の娘02.png from the previous release to the new release's graphics/pictures folder temporarily, as the previous saves will want to look for those files before it registers the new programming. Once you save again on those files, the Japanese image files shouldn't be necessary anymore.

If during play you run across any errors, text or programming, please go ahead and post about them and I'll see if I can't try and fix them. The format of the game does not allow me to spell check my work easily, and it leaves things quite open to mistakes.

Finally, to all the people who have already helped with spotting errors in the text, of special note being KMZ who gave me a hefty word document full of them with notation for easier use... thank you. You made this project quite a bit more polished than it would have otherwise been.

EDIT: And now 1.1, which is quite a small change. Just some grammatical fixes and sorting out the errors in the recollection room.rabidchibi0http://www.blogger.com/profile/03552325474312497003noreply@blogger.com48
